As the craft beer community grows, there are more and more players involved who are truly contributing to the scene. Clearly, the brewers get the most shine because, hey, none of us would be here without them. However, we noticed that one particular group of folks isn’t quite getting a ton of attention: the gentle, kind, generous warriors who keep our liquor stores operating so that us beer nerds can keep our fridges full of hoppy goodness.
For our penultimate Vermont podcast, we connected with the Wine & Beer Manager of our favourite place in the state, Winooski’s Beverage Warehouse. Jason Dennis, on top of being a great guy and extremely knowledgeable on all things beer, has the best beard in the game, hands down.
We decided to do our lengthier chat in the comfort of our Burlington hotel room, where Jason lugged a big ass box of some of his favourite local beers. We simply asked him to bring three or four beers that he felt would represent Vermont, but instead his generosity prevailed and he brought no less than 15 bottles and cans. What a legend.
The span of a one to two hour podcast isn’t enough to consume that many beers, so we narrowed it down to give solid choices to give us a great overview of what Vermont is capable of. And it was awesome.
One thing that surprised us, however, was Jason’s affinity for Quebec beers. We always felt that whatever we bring south of the border can’t possibly cut it for the fellow beer snobs who are used to drinking the likes of Alchemist, Lawson’s, Hill Farmstead, Trillium, Tree House and Fiddlehead on the daily. But not Jason; in fact, he was so enamoured with QC beers that when we wrapped up the interview in-store the next day (video coming soon), he was rocking the finest craft beer gear from our fine province and insisted we get footage of his Quebec section.
It was an extremely reassuring conversation – if someone in Vermont is that amped about what’s happening here then we truly must have something to offer. It gave us some much needed perspective about what we’re doing right here at home.
Enjoy our chat with Jason, and if you want to hear the whole thing, head over to iTunes and check it out. Cheers!
