Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday in 2017. On account of that, the Canadian Brewing Awards were held in the nation’s capital, Ottawa, this May — and BAOS was there. The conference was pretty cool; there was more craft beer flowing than anything we’d ever seen in our short beer lives, some of the greatest minds in Canadian brewing were in the building, and we were about to have a front row seat to it all.
Primarily we’re craft beer podcasters, which then turned into becoming YouTubers. While dabbling in multimedia is great for our brand and our content, the tech requirements in the often uncontrolled environments we work in can be a challenge. The plan was to be Step 3 in a 3-step process: receive your award, get your photo taken and jump into a quick interview with us. Bam. Too easy.
So the awards begin — bronze, silver and gold are all announced at the same time, 15 people rush the stage and there’s a maze of humans by the step and repeat. We don’t recognize any faces. Everyone scatters and Scott and I look at each other like “WTF just happened?” We try again. This time, a brewer we just interviewed wins a silver award, so we get in a quick, somewhat awkward 30 second chat. It was terrible. We knew this approach wasn’t going to work.
We’d already recorded an intro the podcast, along with an interview with the President of the awards, plus we’d also just recorded the next podcast in full during the break, so we had no choice but to finish the earlier episode. What the hell were we supposed to do?
Get drunk, of course.
After the festivities, we headed back to our host domicile and decided to drink the official beer of the conference and discuss the events. It came out pretty well in the end, luckily. If you’ve ever been curious as to how a beer awards ceremony in Canada goes down, enjoy!
If you guys haven’t checked the latest videos, we saved you some time searching. You can subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, too, for the long form stuff. Cheers!
