When we were visiting the heralded beer city back in October, we didn’t realize we’d arrived during on one of the worst weekends of the year to be anywhere aside from Denver. The Great American Beer Festival, the largest and most lauded beer fest on the continent, was happening at the same damn time. So, anyone who makes good beer would be up for an award there and would be sipping tasters in Colorado — not hanging out in San Diego with us.
We managed to get in a couple of podcasts during our short stint, and the second of which was with Coronado Brewing Co. I’d had a few of their beers before — once in a trade from an American friend and once (strangely enough) in Australia, where some of their lineup is regularly available. With that experience under my belt, I was looking forward to chatting with the people behind the beer.
Coronado has two breweries in San Diego — a brewpub on Coronado Island itself and a larger production facility in San Diego proper. The two facilities are about a 10 minute drive from each other — we were at the main production brewery, which boasts a long and attractive taproom which backs directly onto the brewhouse. There were at least 20 beers on tap, a huge range of merch and a well-stocked fridge of cans and bottles to go. Even at three in the afternoon, the place was packed with locals necking a pint or two. We only got to sample a couple beers during our stay, as Scott was heading directly to the airport right after the podcast, but everything we drank was super tasty and interesting.
It was great chatting with the Head of Brewing Ops and the Head Brewer — Shawn and Mark, respectively — as they both gave us their distinctive takes on beer in San Diego and where Coronado fits in. There were a bunch of super interesting things that came up that we never thought about — things like cooling the wort, which turns out is super tough in a climate like San Diego’s. We East Coasters never even considered these unique problems, so it was a great eye-opening convo. Check out the video for much more!
If you enjoyed the chat with the fellas, check out the entire convo via Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Check out the last couple of videos we dropped while you’re at it. Cheers!
