Avery Brewing Company, a Boulder, CO based craft brewery and maker of White Rascal Belgian-Style White Ale announced the addition of its Bourbon Barrel-Aged Tangerine Quadruple Ale to the wildly popular Raspberry Sour and Vanilla Bean Stout that currently make up their “Botanicals & Barrels” series. Tangerine Quad is a full-bodied ale that layers notes of rich dark-fruit, vanilla, and caramel with a burst of tangerine peel.
By mid-2017, the “Botanicals & Barrels” series will consist of six barrel-aged beers including the addition of Apricot Sour, Ginger Sour, and Coconut Porter. These six beers all have two things in common. First, they are all aged in barrels and second, they all consist of just one ingredient outside of the standard grain, hops, yeast, and water recipe.
“The interesting thing about our Botanicals & Barrels series is that as beautiful and simple as the final beer is, it is the culmination of an insanely complex and intricate process”, says Travis Rupp, Avery’s resident Beer Archaeologist and head of the Barrel Aging program, “It’s both an art and a science to allow the menagerie of competing flavors in the beer and the barrels to be married together and end up in a masterfully blended barrel-aged beer.”
The inspiration behind the Tangerine Quad Ale was from a “tap-room rarity” beer called Mondo Roboticus that was released in the beginning of 2016 at the Avery brewery.
“The bourbon barrel-aged, blood orange peel quadruple ale, called Mondo Roboticus, was delicious and beloved at our tap-room”, says Rupp, “so we decided to make it on a larger scale so that everyone could experience how complex and delicious it is. We are thrilled with how it turned out when using tangerine peel.”
