As an avid tourist of the Atlanta beer scene, last year the name Mitch Steele consistently came up in my conversations with bloggers, brewers and other craft beer geeks. Here’s what made that special: it wasn’t just that I was hearing his name but that it was being used in unison with the phrases “new brewery”, “Atlanta BeltLine” and “best IPAs.” So what’s the big deal? As of yesterday, Atlanta has a new brewery to boast, one with a state-of-the-art facility directed by one of the leading forces credited with the proliferation of the beloved West Coast Style IPA, longtime Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele.
A little over two years ago, an announcement was made that Mitch would depart from Stone Brewing after being there for 10 years. As important as this was, news came after that he would be opening a leading a brewery in Atlanta. The West-Coast Style IPA King was heading to the South, and Georgia couldn’t have been more excited.
New Realm Brewing is nestled perfectly on the beltline, in the heart of Atlanta. This massive complex doubles as a restaurant and features a main dining room, a patio, an outdoor beer garden, that will soon make New Realm dog friendly and a private dining room. There is also a rooftop patio complete with a full bar and plenty of seating. The ambiance reminds me a lot of the restaurant set up at Sierra Nevada, with high ceilings, dim lighting and beautiful, stained hardwood floors, which are reflected in the overall decor.
The culinary experience at New Realm Brewing is on another level – with leadership by Executive Chef Julio Delgado, previously of the JP Atlanta and the the Ritz-Carlton Lake Oconee. The menu brandishes traditional southern flair items like the Cast-iron Smoked Rib Eye Steak and Grandma’s Warm Banana Pudding. Also featuring the expected items like burgers, wings and pizza, the selection guarantees there will be something appetizing available for just about anyone. If you’re looking for at least one personal recommendation, try the delicious BBQ Shrimp Tacos.
New Realm has the capacity to produce 20,000 barrels of beer and they’ve already started canning and bottling a couple of the brews, including the monster beer Radegast – a 11.5% Triple IPA that drinks extremely delicious and balanced. The current tap list features classic and traditionally brewed beers. Some of the standout beers are the Belgian Dubbel, a rich 8% dubbel with a pretty complex body. Quickly becoming a crowd favorite is the Hoplandia IPA, a clean, extremely drinkable and piney West-Coast Style IPA that clocks in at 7.4% ABV. The Coffee Porter is another to look out for with its oh so smooth and roasty character.
New Realm brewing is now open for business, so go check it out.
