New iconic eagle packaging for America’s oldest brewery.

Fresh on the heals of reclaiming its title as America’s top selling craft brewery, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. has announced packaging updates to its core brands of Yuengling Traditional Lager, Light Lager and Black & Tan, to come in April this year.

“We are excited to introduce updated packaging of our core brands which features our powerful Yuengling Eagle & Barrel icon, a proud symbol of our family owned brewery since 1829.” said Dick Yuengling, Owner and President.

The Eagle & Barrel icon has great significance for D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc.  The company’s first brewery named the Eagle Brewery was constructed in Pottsville, PA in 1829.  The Eagle Brewery was later destroyed by fire in 1831, and D.G. Yuengling relocated operations to the current location, which is recognized as America’s Oldest Brewery.

This is the first time the flagship brand Yuengling Traditional Lager packaging has been updated in nearly 30 years. “Lager” is an iconic American favorite known for its rich amber color and medium-bodied flavor.

Light Lager continues to maintain the balance of its full-flavored parent, Traditional Lager, yet is brewed for only 99 calories per 12 oz.

Black & Tan’s new design highlights the brand’s well-balanced English half-and-half style that the brewery debuted over 75 years ago.

“While our packaging is being refreshed, our recipes and the taste of our core brands are not changing,” said Yuengling. “We are pleased with the response from our wholesalers, retailer partners and our very passionate Yuengling consumers on the new packaging designs.”

The new iconic Eagle packaging for Traditional Lager, Light Lager and Black & Tan will be available on all pack types.

As a beer lover and home brewer who has visited Yuengling and tried all their beers within the last six months I have a hard time accepting their claim to being a Craft Brewery. What they really appear to be is a very historical and improbably long surviving regional brewery with a bit of a cult following. They make beers to meet the historical tastes of their fans. They do not appear to look forward or towards improvement of their products very much. I found their beers disappointing and mass market oriented. I originally discovered them seeking better beer than American standard industrial beers. I was in collage then (40 years ago) and there was not much available besides imports that were better than the mass produced. They were not really better just different. I find they make mostly the same beers now as then, and they were typical regional mass marketers then. Just because they have added rather dull seasonal beers to their same old ones does not make them a craft brewery. I think they set out to be called craft not to brew better and interesting beer but so they could claim the volume title and use craft beer’s growing cache. It’s a shame, they could do something great.
