One year after opening its doors in Midtown, Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria and Brewery is raising a glass of oak barrel-aged sour ale to the high points of its whirlwind first year as a part of Detroit’s craft beer scene – including catching the attention President Barack Obama – and refreshing its menu in celebration.
“When the president was in town for the North American International Auto Show, he made Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria and Brewery his lunch spot –it was most definitely thehighlight of our first year,” said Shelby Oberstaedt, general manager. “We’re equally honored and proud to have been selected as a highlight of Detroit’s food and culture scene during his visit – it’s a big accomplishment for a business that’s only been open for a year!”
The Midtown pizzeria and brewery, located at 441 Canfield St. in Detroit, is the brand’s fourth location, joining Traverse City and Ann Arbor restaurants, and a tap room in Dexter. Thousands have visited the Detroit restaurant to taste the artisanal food and craft beer, and experience the grass roots Detroit vibe.
Featuring a casual order-and-eat approach, patrons place their orders at a cash register in the back of the restaurant and then take their seat at a table of their choosing where a server will drop off their meal. Atmosphere is warm and inviting, featuring reclaimed pallet wood, antique lighting, a copper bar with a giant oak barrel, and large communal-style picnic tables and wooden booths.
Recently refreshed in honor of the anniversary, Jolly Pumpkin’s menu features a selection of new and favorite pizzas, salads, sandwiches, appetizers, cocktails and more. From options like Harvest Salad, featuring roasted beet, carrot, kale, arugula, goat cheese, dried cranberries, garlic pumpkin seed and cilantro vinaigrette, to Nachos with red chicken marinade, pickled red onion, cheddar cheese, avocado, and tomatillo salsa, there’s a great selection of craft dishes for everyone.
Pizza fans will want to make Jolly Pumpkin their place on Tuesday nights! From 4-11 p.m.every Tuesday, fans will enjoy $1 off 12 inch pizzas and $2 off 16 inch pizzas. New pizza options include the Sweet Potato and Kale Pizza, featuring kale, sweet potato cream sauce, feta cheese, shaved red onion and pepperoncini; Spinach and Artichoke Pizza, touting parmesan cream, shaved garlic, smoked mozzarella, shaved red onion and lemon zest; and Grilled Chicken Pizza, featuring charred broccolini, basil pesto, goat cheese, mozzarella, arugula, lemon zest and grilled chicken.
“Our style of dining really suits Midtown,” Oberstaedt said. “It’s casual, so you can drop in on a whim with friends for food or a beer, but the menu is gastropub-style – you’re going to enjoy high-quality dishes, crafted with fresh, local ingredients.”
Over the last year, Jolly Pumpkin has strived to use locally-sourced and Michigan-made ingredients, partnering with businesses like Avalon International Breads, The Brinery,Guernsey Dairy, McClure’s Pickles and Ann Arbor’s Sparrow Meats of Kerrytown Market.
“Using local ingredients is just one example of the way we’re working closely with our neighbors here in Midtown and across the state,” Oberstaedt said. “The community in Midtown is very close knit, and we’re proud to be a supportive and contributing member of the food and beverage scene.”
In addition to the menu, Jolly Pumpkin recently updated its mug club. For a one-time $85 fee, patrons will become members of the mug club and take advantage of great benefits like 25 percent off Jolly Pumpkin merchandise, $1 off all beers every day, $2 off all beers during Happy Hour and participate in Mug Club Monday featuring Happy Hour pricing all day long.
